Words With Friends for BlackBerry

Words With Friends for BlackBerry chants are finally over!  The mobile app development team at InterWorks, Inc. has created an intense Words With Friends style game first introduced to the BlackBerry market.  Fightin’ Words is currently available for download at the BlackBerry App World. The team was simply fed-up with the current Scrabble genre games available and decided to do something about it!

Fightin’ Words allows you to test your mental toughness in this no-holds-barred Words With Friends style crossword game. Battle with a random opponent or wage a multi-battle war with a heated rival of your choosing.

Similar to the blank tile in Scrabble or Words With Friends, Fightin’ Words “POW” tile can be used as any letter or to replace another letter on the board. This tile can give you the ability to make a big come-back, or can be used to put your opponent away.

Fightin’ Words will allow you to send invites to your friends, play multiple players at once, and choose notification options. The graphics are awesome and thanks to the dedicated InterWorks team, the bugs have been worked out during the testing. Believe it or not, they were paid to partake in these epic battles with their coworkers.

Standing in line at the grocery store? Have a three hour delay at the airport? No problem! This sure-fire boredom reducer will make the time fly!

This app was released in May 2011, so is relatively new to the market and has been gaining in popularity every day since its arrival. “Like” us on Facebook and join the community.  Share game tips or brag about a high score. Feel free to post your experiences or your username and unite with the Fightin’ Words community.  Stay connected and watch for the Android version due out soon!

Download today at the BlackBerry App World!

Thank you! I have been waiting so long for this genre of game to hit BlackBerry. I just wish more of my friends owned BB’s :P

The initial app has worked great! All I hope for in version 1.2 are fixed notifications (I currently get neither push or email on my Torch).

    Great job InterWorks team!

  2. admin says:

    Hi Tyler,

Thanks for the feedback! Your email address wasn’t in the system correctly, I updated it and you should receive notifications now. There is a bug with push notifications that will be fixed with the 1.2 release (out in 1 week or so).

    • Ashley Campbell says:

I am unable to receive notifications for my Fightin’ Words app. Any ideas what I should do? I have the notifications set to be “on”

      • admin says:

This is often a problem that comes up with RIM. From what I have found uninstalling and re-installing the app will fix it.

  3. Tyler Bickel says:

Fantastic! I am a very satisfied customer and have already recommended to a ton of BlackBerry (and soon android) users :)

… dope game. now i know why my girl is always playin words with friends! she can’t make fun of my blackberry no more…

  12. nycgirl says:

can you play against people who have words with friends on the IPhone?

    • admin says:

@nycgirl No you cannot. Fightin’ Words is a game we created for the BlackBerry. We are a completely different company and so our game is not compatible with WWF. However, we are hoping to roll out versions on other platforms so you can play against all of your friends.

  14. TeSTyP says:

i love this game!!!! thank you!!

  15. BigBen85 says:

    Really liking this game.

    The pros:
    1. Nice Graphics (for BlackBerry)
    2. Keyboard input of words (way better than pick and place on other games)
    3. Good support, took care of my issue quickly.

    The cons:
    1. Missing some features I would like. In talking with support, it sounds like most of those will be in an upcoming release.
    2. Only on BlackBerry. Android version is supposed to be coming (per @Tyler)

    Looking forward to future updates!

Definitely looks better than wordrival and placing tiles is definitely easier. Still lacking some features, but good first attempt. It’s about time blackberry got some real games, hopefully more coming with os 7 coming out soon.

likin’ it so far. def the best word game on the bb so far.

  26. Dom says:

Definitely loving the game! This game was one of the major reasons I might’ve jumped ship from my beloved BB but I’m glad you created this reason to stay!

I just wanted to bring to your attention:
    - Push Notifications, when turned on, only make the designated sound and no notification icon shows up
    - A shuffle feature would be a great help
    - Of course, the incorporation of threaded messaging within the game.

Thank you so much for making the game!

    • admin says:

      Hi Dom,

Thanks for playing Fightin’ Words! Push will be fixed in 1.20 release, we’ll be releasing in a few days. Shuffle and chat are also planned in an upcoming release, so stay tuned!

      • shawna says:

Hey! I love this game but I got an update for it today and installed it but didn’t reboot it right away. But I’ve been turning my phone off and on and reinstalling the app but it doesn’t work! What do I do? Anyone?

        • admin says:

          Hi Shawna,

          What error are you receiving?

Did you turn your phone off by holding down end call button? That won’t do it, you actually have to reboot it by removing the battery or pressing left ALT + right SHIFT + DEL.

  32. Jonny7 says:

    Hi guys,

    Loving this app so far!

Suggestion for future update; would it be possible to give an opponent a timer for when they haven’t made a move for ages? For e.g. I’m in a game right now and my opponent hasn’t made a move for 5 days. If it’s my friend and I know they’ve gone on holiday or something, then fair enough. But if it’s not and I just want to wrap it up, an option to force your opponent to make a move or they forfeit might be good. Obviously, to make it fair, this option would only be available after waiting for a sizeable length of time, like a few days.

I know I could ‘Resign’, but it’s their move!

    Thanks for listening!

    • admin says:

      Hi Jonny,

      Thanks for the feedback!

We’ve already built this into the game as of last week. If a player does not play for 7 days, they will be “auto-resigned” and you’ll win the game!

      • Tanya says:

I am glad to read this because I am currently waiting on a player who has not moved in 6 days. It is NOT my fault he has not moved so if I resign, I lose, which is unfair. Perhaps there is a way to skip their turn (after 24-36 hours) in the future? Please.

      • Joe says:

Apparently this feature does not work as designed. I downloaded the app in November 2011 so I must have a recent version, and I now have one player who has not played in 13 days, two in 11 days, etc. Running a BB bold, FW Free v 1.28.4. I do not want to buy it until I know this works. Is there anything I can do?

      • Joe says:

Seems this feature is not working again. I have games that are 12 and 13 days old.

  33. Chant says:

I just wanna say I love this app. Great scrabble game. I do have a few suggestions for improvement though.

-Allow the user to view the score of a word before the word is actually played
-Either send an automated reminder/let player remind the opponent it is their turn
-Shuffling the tiles would be helpful
-Work with the people at BeBuzz to incorporate Fightin’ Words into their accepted programs (so I can customize the LED color).

    • admin says:

      Hi Chant,

Thanks for the props. Regarding your suggestions:

      1. We do most logic processing on server, not the phone (this is because we’re building many clients (i.e. android, web, etc…)), it would require significant work on each client. Not saying we won’t do it, but it will be further down the priority list
      2. Nudge is a feature we plan to add in the near future.
      3. Shuffle is a feature we plan to add in the near future.
      4. I hadn’t even though of that one, I’ll give them a shout and see what happens.

      • Chant says:

Great to hear that most of this stuff is in the works. Its also awesome to have this kind of feedback on an app. In regards to the first point, I have seen in some other apps that they calculate the score without checking the validity of the word. I’m no programmer, but the logic potion that’s on the server is used to check to see if what is being entered is a word. I would think the phone could calculate just the raw score, which is a matter of adding the tiles and then adding the double/ triple letter/word bonuses.
Just saying it would be nice to know what you word will be worth before you play it.

        • admin says:

You’re right, we could definitely do it on the phone, it’s just lower on our priority list now. We actually want to have the app across multiple platforms so you can play your friends on android, iphone, Windows Phone 7, and Facebook.

          Thanks again for the feedback!

  34. Addisson says:

It would be great to be able to have a notification saying that “Player A has made their move” or some type of notification (other than an email notification). I did see an option to allow push notifications and it is enabled, but I haven’t recieved any notifications from this App. I am pretty sure I noticed this mentioned in other comments, but wanted to support this addition.

Also, a chat feature would be a great addition.

i would love to play, but i don’t understand why we should have to pay to play. words with friends on iphone/ipad/android is free!

    • admin says:

Unfortunately ad supported apps don’t don’t generate a lot of revenue on BlackBerry like they do on Android & IPhone, mainly due to the lack of advertisers. That’s why we charge a fee.

  50. penguin22 says:

Although FW works after using a device switch wizard going from my Torch 9800 to a Torch 2 9810 the resolution is off. Is there an expected timeframe for a version that will natively support the 9810? Will the 9900 series also be supported if they are not already?

    • admin says:

      Hi Penguin,

We are working on it, we’ve just really been focused on working out some network bugs that are keeping people from playing. But yes, we are definitely aware of the issue (some of us have upgraded phones already) and are working on it.

  51. Dom says:

    I have two comments:

    - Has the program been updated to support BB 7? I’m about to switch to the Bold 9900 from the Tour and I want to make sure I can still play!
    - Is there a tentative date on when the android version of the game will release? My friend has an android and we’re very excited to be able to finally go against eachother!

Thanks again for bring us such a great APP!

    - Dom

    • admin says:

Hi Dom, the graphics are not lined up perfectly on 9900, but you can still play. We are working on updating now.

Android version is still in beta, hoping to have it out in the next few weeks.

  52. Susana says:

I do not recieve the push notifications, also I was wondering when the version will be released for when chat would be avaliable

    • admin says:

      Hi Susana,

We are working on chat now, but don’t have an ETA yet. We are looking into the issue with push notifications not working for some users after they upgrade.

Is it possible for other people to invite me if they don’t know my email address or nickname? I seem to have received a random invite. I don’t see a way to contact or chat with this person to find out more. Thanks for a great product!

    • admin says:

Yes, you can search under invite friends and it does a “best match” so you don’t have to know people’s names. Plus, people may have found your name on the leaderboards. Chat is coming soon.

  57. Dave says:

Where are the leaderboards? How do I view them?

  58. dasDestruktion says:

When is OS7 optimization coming? This thing is not so hot on the 9900/9930. :(

  59. Gufymom says:

At the end of the game, the person with tiles remaining has those points deducted from their score, as it should be, however, the person who used all their tiles gets those same points added to THEIR score. This gives the person who cleared their tiles double points. What gives?

    • admin says:

Hi! You are correct. Although are game is not the same as Scrabble, this rule of scoring is similar to theirs. We are thinking about changing it to remove the addition of the points as it does seem like a “double” penalty. I’m assuming you would vote “Yes” for that :)

      • jvanarcken says:

I think the scoring of the remaining tiles should stay as desigend simliar to Scrabble, That makes it strategic to try to use up your tiles so the others have to give you your points. Scrabble has been a favorite for years.

  60. Amber says:

It will not let me buy or download the game and i have paid for it already once and it won’t let me download it it keeps saying error 30227. please help i love this game

  61. thelonious says:

Hi I’ve had your game for awhile and I enjoy it..this evening it wasn’t letting me log in..this has happened before and I uninstalled then reinstalled the game from app world..this time it won’t let me reinstall it..could us some help thank you..

  62. Update says:

Great game! Very well thought out and exceuted game. Please provide a UI update for the Blackberry 9900 and this game will be absolutely perfect. Any idea when this might be available?

    • admin says:

      Hi Jesse,

We are working on getting the UI perfect for OS 7 as I type. Hopefully if all goes well it should be ready by the end of the week. With the approval time that it takes to get to the app world it might be two weeks till you guys starting seeing the update.

      Thanks, Mark

  63. Request says:

Great work! Do you think you guys will be updating the game icon in the near future? Just want it looking more like the fightin words icon instead of just the bird, you know what I mean? I know it’s a small detail but it would be nice to have :)

    • admin says:

Thanks for the feedback! The challenge was that the icon space was so small that when we put the icon there it wasn’t very distinguishable. The higher res phones can probably handle it now. We’ll test it out. Thanks!

  64. Lisa says:

Is there any way of knowing the numbers of different letters available? As in, I know it’s different from Scrabble in that there are 2 K’s in Fightin’ Words… But then how many (for example) S’s does a game start out with?

  65. Cindy Walker says:

I can’t remember what I set my username as and I can’t get into my profile…any suggestions?

  66. mariska wessels says:

Hi, I keep on receiving this error when I try to playy the game. Error received. Or game error received… I have uninstalled it when it gave me a purchase error, but that is fixed now… Now it keeps on telling me game error received. I wish I can play this game with my husband… Please advise what I must do.

    • admin says:

      Hi Mariska,

If you hit the blackberry button it will pull up the menu and there is a “Send Error Report” option. Please do that and it will send us the specific error you are encountering and hopefully we can resolve it quickly. Thanks for you patience.

  75. Wade Funk says:

When is the proposed “chat” feature going to be released? I’m eager to contact some of the regulars I’ve been playing against, so I can rib them for whooping me!!! ;)

  76. John says:

    Dear Admin,

Do you guys have a timeline on when you plan to release a BBM connected and/or chat feature for Fightin’ Words?

Overall, I love the game. Please add me anyone. My username is kingjohn

  77. Nathan says:

I have downloaded the Free version on app world, and i have recently been experiencing connection problems, i have rebooted the phone, holding red key as well as battery pulling, nothing seems to work. I love the game and it is very addictive, unfortunately i cannot get it to work. Can something be done?

  78. claire says:

Can you change your username? And how?

  79. Joe says:

I posted this above in reply to anotehr message, not sure if you will see it: Apparently this feature (auto-resign) does not work as designed. I downloaded the app in November 2011 so I must have a recent version, and I now have one player who has not played in 13 days, two who have not played in 11 days, etc.

Running a BB bold, FW Free v 1.28.4. I do not want to buy it until I know this works. But, then I will definitely buy. Is there anything I can do?

    • admin says:

      Hi Joe,

The Auto-Resigner has been turned off while we make some tweaks to it so it does not impact the performance of the server. It will be turned back on soon.

  80. Mark says:

Can I play fightin words against someone who has an iphone?

  81. priddy31 says:

  82. priddy31 says:

Oh yeah, if anyone wants to play against me, bring it on, lol find me under the name priddy31

  83. gatzbarkley says:

I’m completely addicted to this game. Thank you so much guys. My only issue is that it has switched my score with an opponents twice and recently gave my opponent my hard earned win :( Hope you can fix that little bug, but its all in good fun and I’m enjoying myself thoroughly. I wish you all the best in developing the game for more platforms…

    • admin says:

      Hi Dennis,

Can you tell me what player you were playing against and we’ll investigate?

      • Joe says:

As long as you are investigating, I have a game where my opponent spelled a word that used a J on TL space and then crossed a TW space, and ended up with 84 points. The math WOULD be right, except that the TW space had already been used, so she should not have gotten credit for that. And no, it was not a POW tile on the TW space.

    • kellmongo says:

gatzbarkely! My favorite opponent! Since there’s no chat feature yet…thought I’d say hello here! Love to compete with you. Sometimes I am amazed at the amount of points you can get and am always excited when I actually win a game! Game on buddy!

  84. Janice says:

I’ve been playing with a random player for a while and we were pretty evenly matched. All of a sudden he has been using wild words with really high points…is there a cheat that he may be using? I’d rather not play if there is a cheat ap out there somewhere.

    • admin says:

      Hi Janice,

There are several online sites that allow you to enter letters and it will show all possible words. My guess is that is what your opponent is doing :(

      • Janice says:

        Thanks for the response, Cole.

      • Joe says:

I have had a couple of opponents do the same thing with me, but what I find is that later in the gameusing long words is not as effective as using good strategy when it comes to blocking or enabling your opponent’s use of DW/TW or DL/TL spaces, or finding smaller words that happen to create multiple words going in the perpendicular direction, things like that. A “cheat” site can’t really help with that. Stick with a good strategy and you will frustrate the people who rely on “cheat” sites.

  85. Antonio says:

This game is great. I really like how simple and easy it is. I also like the fact that it does not have all those corny graphics that “Words with Friends” has. Would be great if a chat was available so the user can communicate. Cant wait for this version to come out for Iphone so i can play with my friends who have the iphone. Great job guys, keep up the good work!

  86. jefferson says:

Are their going to be other dictionaries in fightin’ words? So that you can play in dutch?

  87. jefferson says:

Will this game be available in other languages? A Dutch dictionary would be very nice!

  88. leesy says:

Is there a way I can change my username? I am unable to find any “options” esque menus.

  89. Jvanarcken says:

I am loving the game, but have a couple of suggestions. Can you add the red asterisk to the icon on the Blackberry screen to notify you if you have a turn? Kind of like the way the Email messages, Text messages, and Facebook icon show this red asterisk to let you know you have new messages. Secondly, I think you ought to post the Letter Distribution in your HELP file so users that are not familiar with Scrabble will have an idea of how many letters to expect. Curious if the Letter Distribution matches Scrabble.

  90. ebenvios says:

Can you play this online as well, on your pc?

  97. nepgirl says:

    Hi guys!

    Just LOVE this game!!
Have a question though: as of today we receive this message “Unable to contact Fightin’ Word’s server at this moment.” (We both use it on Blackberry 8520).
It’s been for hours now, and my niece (who’s playing on a Android phone) has no problems what so ever…
I tried to delete and later download it again, that didn’t seem to work.

Is there a solution to this problem??

  98. ghauler says:

Hi, I love the game! I just wish it worked better on my torch. It freezes so much and has so many “unable to connect to server” errors. Other than that its a ton of fun!

Does the server go down often? I’ve had difficulty connecting from time to time. I would be nice if there was a status page that we can visit to confirm if you’re up or down.

I see in the latest update for the android and blackberry versions at the end of Feb. 2012, it says that chat feature was added, but I can’t find it in any of my games. How do you access chat in a game?

Just updated to the new release today. Problems on my 9930. Game won’t close, and when I try to play it again, everything freezes and I can’t “re-open” the game. The only thing I can do is do a battery pull. I have to do that every time. Anyone else having this issue.

    • admin says:

We have found this issue as well and we are working on fixing it. We will have the update published to the app worlds soon.

I have an older version of fightin words, that doesn’t have the chat feature. Do I have to pay for the newer version to get this feature or is their an upgrade available?

  117. shante barnes says:

I am not receiving the push notifications after the newest chat update for Blackberry. I receive the notifications when my opponent sends a chat. However, if they do not, I won’t receive a push notification.

    • admin says:

      Hi Jay,

      Please try the following:
Uninstall Fightin Words, reboot the phone and then reinstall from the app world.

It has to do with App World losing the push subscription during the update.

  120. Kim says:

I have recently switched from a blackberry to an iPhone and wondered if I could install this app on my iPhone or is itexclusively only available for blackberry users

    • admin says:

      Hi Kim,

We are currently on BlackBerry and Android only. We do have an IPhone version in development, but it will be a couple of months before it’s ready to go, I’ll put you on our list of people to notify.

  121. Lisa says:

I’d love to be notified when Fightin Words is available for iPhone.

  122. Tyrone says:

I have an issue with multiple notifications via both email and push notification which means i get about 8 or 9 for each turn either I or an opponent makes. In some cases, the email notification tells me that my opponent has played the word that i actually played. I thought the latest update might have cured it but it didnt :(

Apart from that, i LOOOOOOOVVVEEEE this game

  123. Quite nice, this will go inside my bookmarks !

I have noticed that the questions on this site about a DUTCH version/language are not being answered. So please, again… Are there any plannes for a dutch version??

    • admin says:

      Hi Terry,

Yes, we already have the server built out for Multi-Language support and are adding it to the clients now. We are in the process of putting together a Dutch dictionary now. You should see it released in about a month.

  130. Sixfiveguy says:

Definitely the best game out there. Board layout is considerably better than Words With Friends. I have a suggestion for the stats page. It would be nice to be able to see your head to head record against other players that you’ve played against. Keep up the good work, I’m hooked!

    • admin says:

      Hey SixFiveGuy!

I wondered if I would ever get to chat with our #1 player :) Thanks for the props, we’re working hard to keep improving the game. We’ll look at what it would take to store head to head count.
